Heavy duty blackout builds are a whole different breed of vehicle. This custom Chevy Silverado HD 2500 has a heavy hitting presence on the road that reminds us of a sledgehammer. Thanks to its satin black color change wrap, gloss black powder coat wheels, chrome delete trim, window tint, and red painted calipers this blackout Chevy build leaves a hefty impact.
Satin Black Vinyl Wrap
Originally this Silverado was gloss black before we stretched a satin black 3M vinyl wrap over it. Installing a color change wrap like this will block out the original paint job and some can even change the finish from gloss to satin, like this one. The satin finish reduces the reflective shimmer of gloss creating a stark and serious appearance similar to matte. On a big truck like this custom blackout Silverado HD, it leans toward a rough and ready look.
Vinyl wraps can be polarizing, but the truth is they are a cost-effective way of customizing your ride. They also come with some unexpected benefits. While it’s on your vehicle it will protect your paint from chips and corrosion. Plus removing automotive grade vinyl doesn’t harm the car whenever you want to remove it or get a new wrap. If properly installed, a wrap will last up to 7 years.
Black Powder Coat Wheels
Building a blackout Chevy Silverado means no more chrome wheels. Still the wheel design on this Silverado was pretty slick and we wanted to keep it around. Instead of spending a ton of cash on a new custom wheel design we chose to apply a black powder coat finish. This allowed us to keep the heavy-duty Chevy wheels and it helps us complete the blackout.
Powder coating is more durable than standard paint with plenty of color options available for you to choose. The main benefits that come with powder coating are high strength, better coverage, cost efficiency, and a more environmentally friendly impact.
Red Painted Calipers
Painted brake calipers go perfect with a fresh set of powder coated wheels. They help to create more depth to the styling of your truck which makes them one of the best spots to add some personalization. We painted these calipers red, but we’ve had customers do orange, yellow, pink, blue, green, and more.
With brake calipers its crucial to apply a durable and heat resistant paint. They have to deal with a lot of friction, debris, and road chemicals which can all be blocked with a coat of the proper paint.
Chrome Delete Trim
We needed Silverado chrome delete trim to give us the full-on blackout look. First, while the front end was disassembled, we replaced the grille and lower bumper with painted OEM parts. The front bumper, rear bumper, and mirror caps are originally chrome, but these pieces were taken care of during our vinyl wrap.
Of course, we had to alter that iconic bowtie by installing a complete blackout chevy emblem on the new grille. The black emblem gives this murdered out Silverado a distinct appeal that the original gold one just can’t provide.
To cap off the front end we also painted the signature HD hood scoop the same gloss black to match the rest of the trim.
With the main bits of chrome trim blacked out there were only two minor pieces left. The door handles and window trim can’t be left as the out of place chrome color when everything else has been treated. Once every bit of chrome trim is deleted this black out Chevy truck is looking solid.
Window Tint
Finally, we installed a timeless accessory that increases style and protects your interior. 3M window tint is one of the best additions with the irreplaceable benefit of solar energy rejection. That means your rides interior stays cooler during hot summer months and protects plastics in the dash from sun fading over time. It is critical for blackout builds to have any kind of heat reduction since they soak up all that warmth!
Window tint is a timeless appearance upgrade that improves the demeanor of any vehicle. However, it’s important to know that not all tint is made equal. We only use 3M tints because of their benefits over competing brands. We wrote a whole article about the benefits of 3M tint to help you learn more before making your decision.
Tints are offered from 5% to 70% with the lower numbers being darker. The % measures VLT (Visual Light Transference) which quantifies how much light comes through the film. When you go to select your tint, you need to keep in mind your local laws, so that you don’t get ticketed. We always recommend a professional install for this modification. Poor tint jobs will bubble and discolor over time. Make sure your window tint installer has a good warranty to protect your investment!
