This 1956 Ford Thunderbird carries a special history, having been passed down through multiple generations of the same family. By the time it arrived at our shop, it was ready for a full revival so its owners could once again enjoy cruising in a meaningful family heirloom.

For this restoration, the goal wasn’t simply to preserve it’s history, but to reimagine it for modern driving performance, comfort, and reliability. It underwent a full transformation from the ground up, blending classic styling with cutting-edge engineering.
Modern Performance Powertrain
Under the hood, this build now features a Gen 3 5.0L Coyote GT engine, bringing modern Ford performance to a legendary classic. Known for its high-revving power, reliability, and impressive horsepower, the Coyote platform dramatically elevates the driving experience while maintaining Ford heritage.

Paired with the engine is a 10-speed automatic transmission, delivering smooth shifts, improved fuel efficiency, and responsive acceleration across all driving conditions.

Supporting the upgraded drivetrain is a large-capacity 24-gallon Mustang fuel tank, allowing for extended cruising range and improved fuel system reliability. It’s way better than the ratty old hoses it used to have.
Additional performance upgrades include:
- Aluminum radiator with integrated transmission cooler
- Custom stainless steel exhaust system
- Electronic power steering assist for improved drivability

All of these upgrades makes this ride easier to operate while maintaining its core identity.
Custom Chassis & Suspension
To ensure the Thunderbird performs as well as it looks, the original platform was replaced with an Art Morrison custom chassis, providing a rigid, performance-focused foundation. Most of that is due to all new materials, expert craftsmanship, and a full independent suspension.

This modern suspension setup significantly improves ride quality, cornering capability, and road handling while maintaining a comfortable cruising experience.
High-Performance Braking System
Stopping power was equally important in this build, especially taking into consideration the power of its new engine. The Thunderbird now features a premium Wilwood braking system with:
- 14-inch Wilwood performance brakes
- 6-piston front calipers
- 4-piston rear calipers

This setup offers exceptional braking performance, increased confidence, and improved safety for modern road use.
Restored Interior with Modern Comfort
The interior stays true to the Thunderbird’s original character while incorporating modern comfort and upgraded manufacturing. It was always intended to be more focused on comfort and luxury since it hit the market in 1955 to compete with the corvette.

This build features:
- Fresh full leather interior with classic Thunderbird badging
- New red carpeting and leather trim accents
- Custom leather bench seat with raised Thunderbird seal
- Power windows

One of the standout features inside is the custom 1957 Ford dashboard conversion, paired with updated classic-style instruments and gauge clusters. Sitting neatly inside polished aluminum dash trim, the cabin delivers a perfect blend of vintage styling and subtle modernization.

Technology upgrades were also added to make cruising in this Thunderbird more enjoyable, including:
- Retro-style radio with Bluetooth connectivity
- Upgraded premium stereo system

Of course to we also had to insure that all the wiring was update for everything to work as great as it looked. We spent more than a few hours tangled in electric work.

These additions create a driving environment that feels authentically vintage while delivering modern convenience and entertainment.
Exterior Restoration Details
When this Thunderbird first arrived, it wore Ford’s classic black exterior. Like many vintage vehicles, years of storage had taken a toll on the paint, weather stripping, chrome, and overall finish. After spending years tucked away collecting dust and must, it was time for a complete transformation.

Although we appreciate the timeless appeal of the original black finish, the owners opted for a bold and vibrant true red paint job. The finished result is a striking color that burns the image of this 1956 Thunderbird into your mind in a good way.

To achieve this finish, the body was removed from the frame and fully stripped down. All old paint was removed, rusted areas were repaired, and the body was carefully prepped and smoothed before refinishing. This extensive prep work laid the foundation for the deep, glossy final coat.

We didn’t have nearly as much updates to the body’s styling as we did with our 1970’s Ford Bronco builds.

Because this Thunderbird was built to be driven and enjoyed, the owners also wanted the freedom of open-air cruising. A brand-new khaki convertible soft top was installed, giving the car a clean classic contrast against the red exterior. We also restored the original hardtop so it remains available if the owners ever want to switch things up.

Additional exterior upgrades include:
- LED lighting throughout
- New vintage-style emblems
- 18×9.5 U.S. Mags Bastille 5 polished chrome wheels
- Continental tires
