It makes sense the GMC Yukon Denali is described as a mammoth sized package of style, luxury, and technology. With such impressive features on a full-size SUV of this caliber it deserves a unique and trend setting exterior. That’s exactly what we set out to accomplish with this stormtrooper styled build.
This 2018 Yukon Denali received a chrome delete to blackout the window trim, grille trim, and emblems. It delivers a distinct final look since we color matched the grille to the summit white body of this GMC. Let’s take a look at each of these mods and how they contribute to the vehicle.
Custom Painted Grille
Typically grilles are black, so throwing in the exact opposite color with a custom painted grille creates a striking look. White grilles make a vehicle feel clean and light which helps to elevate the its overall perception. In some cases it creates a retro feel like the classic Bronco SUVs. Painting your vehicle’s grille or an accent piece on or around the grille is an impactful way to give your ride a new appearance.
Chrome Delete Trim
The trim around the edge of the grille was given a chrome delete. Meaning the trim was removed and painted gloss black to form a dark outline around the fresh whiten grille making it into a strong focal point. This practice of painting the grille trim is common to enlarge or shrink the perceived size of the grille. Aside from the trim around the grille other pieces of the SUV got blackout trim.
Parts like the roof rails were taken off from the top of the SUV, painted black, and re-installed. Followed by the fine edges of the window trim, although these pieces were wrapped with gloss black vinyl instead of being painted for this custom Yukon Denali. Working with fine trim can be difficult, and sometimes calls for the use of vinyl wrap.
On the lower half of the vehicle there were a few other areas that needed blackout treatment. These pieces included the side step trim, lower grille, rear bumper trim, and rear hatch valence. Each of which got coated gloss black to bring every last bit of the accent pieces together.

Blackout GMC Emblems
Having the old red GMC emblem on the white grille wasn’t giving us the look we wanted, so we used a blackout emblem instead. The blackout emblem style in this case was created by removing the original emblem and painting it.
Once the new black GMC emblems were installed, they complemented the other black trim pieces and provided a strong color contrast against the white. If this were done on a traditional black grille it would have blended into the background. This color pairing draws people’s attention toward the front-end and forms hard lines on the vehicle that make each section of the SUV easy to decipher.
Powder Coat Wheels
Having all the body chrome accents deleted left the gray wheels feeling plain. We addressed this by adding a black powder coat finish to the wheels that would go along with the other black features we added.
Powder coat finishes create two important benefits. The first being their flexibility of design which allows for the wheels to be customized to almost any color. Which is quite beneficial because you can match the right color scheme for your vehicle. The second upside of a powder coat finish is their long-lasting durability. Wheels take a lot of damage from debris and gravel along the road. These powder coat finishes help provide another layer of protection for your ride’s wheels.
Black powder coat wheels mark the last blackout modification and finish off the exterior appeal of this custom GMC Yukon Denali.
