There is a near-endless selection of accessories available for the 5th generation Toyota 4Runner. The problem isn’t finding them, it’s finding the right ones. Here’s 5 of the best accessories that might not be on your radar.
Tail as Turn Module
A Tail as Turn module takes your 4Runner tail lights and converts them to also function as turn signals. This frees up your turn signal bulb location to serve as a second reverse light. After this plug and play modification you’ll have a unique LED turn signal and a brighter reverse light.
These kits are a staple of St. Louis-based Diode Dynamics. They feature a 3 year warranty and installation is fast with minimal tools required. Their installation videos are easy to follow so anyone can do this conversion.
This 4Runner accessory is the kind that is easy to show off and adds noticeable functionality when driving with a brighter reverse light. It starts at $130 for the module and LED bulbs.
Roof Basket
Adding a roof rack to your vehicle makes a big visual impact and makes long trips much more manageable. The TRD Pro model comes with an OEM roof basket, and the brand-new 2020 Venture Edition 4Runner comes equipped with an aftermarket Yakima Megawarrior Rack.
You can purchase your own MegaWarrior, but if you’re looking for an alternative we would recommend a Kuat Vagabond X or a Thule Canyon XT. Both are comparable to the Yakima in size and price when paired with an extension.
Brand | Basket | Length | MSRP |
BajaRack | 4Runner G5 Basket | 62″ | $990 |
Kuat | Vagabond X w/Extension | 65″ | $684 |
Yakima | MegaWarrior w/Extension | 74″ | $618 |
Thule | Canyon XT w/Extension | 59″ | $500 |
Suspension Lift Kit
A lift kit will raise your 4Runner up, creating more ground clearance and improving your stance. A lift kit also nets you additional room to increase your tire size. You’ll need a fair amount of experience to install your own lift kit, so it is not a DIY project for most people.
We recently used a Toytec kit to lift a 4Runner 3 inches for 285/70R17 Nitto Terra Grappler G2 tires. If you have a specific tire size you’re trying to accommodate contact us to find out which lift kit is right for build.
Leather Seats
Leather is only available in the Limited and Nightshade models, so it’s likely yours is missing this luxury feature. Most people don’t think that leather can be added to a vehicle after the fact, but it can. That’s a good thing, because the walk from the base model SR5 to the leather-standard Limited is a whopping $8,865.
Katzkin offers vehicle-specific kits that replace factory cloth with the leather of your choice. You can design it yourself, or choose one of their preset designs.
No matter what design you choose, these are full seat coverings, not seat covers. The cloth upholstery is removed from the factory seat and it is replaced with Katzkin leather. Make sure you find a preferred Katzkin installer for a professional installation.
Window Tint
The privacy glass of your rear windows is much darker than the other windows. Toyota (and every other automaker) does this to abide by the strictest state regulations.
If you want uniform privacy and protection from the sun on all your windows you need to have them tinted. We use 5%, 20%, and 35% tint films depending on the window and person. The lower the number, the darker it is.
We always recommend a professional installation for this modification.
