The Ford Expedition is a big 8-seat basecamp built to haul groups of adventure seekers. When this Ford Expedition came to us it didn’t seem very daring or explorative with its factory exterior. To change things up we performed a chrome delete and window tint along with powder coating the wheels to create a bold blackout look. Now this modified Ford Expedition is an all-black stallion that hauls people along any beaten path.

Chrome Delete Trim
Creating a full blackout Ford Expedition begins with a chrome delete that eliminates the factory trim. Most of the time we do this by removing and painting each chrome piece, but blackout replacement parts or a black vinyl wrap can also be used. Chrome deletes have continued to grow as a popular Ford Expedition mod since they go well with any color. Although chrome deletes on black vehicles create a fully murdered out look that develops a bold appearance.
Parts of this Expedition that were removed and painted chrome include: the grille trim, fog light bezels, window trim, rear hatch valance, door handles, and sidestep accents. Each part got coated gloss black at our in-house paint booth. Matching the body color is key for a quality blackout and our technicians are aces when it comes to finding a seamless blend.
Blackout Ford Emblems
To cap off the chrome delete and really create more of a custom Ford Expedition feel we blacked out the oval badges. Painted blackout emblems personalize the Ford branding which can really make the vehicle feel unique. The new blackout emblems have an embossed quality to them, and the monotone color scheme can peak peoples interest drawing more attention as they come to investigate the make and model.
Powder Coated Wheels and Tires
Instead of exchanging the factory wheels for some custom ones we used a powder coat finish to change their appearance. The old factory wheels stuck out after the chrome delete and we wanted the full-on black on black look. Using the powder coating finish saves some cash and allows you to change the wheel color while also improving the durability of these rims.
Complimenting the fresh gloss black wheels are a set of rugged tires. Since this custom expedition is geared for tailgates or campouts, we needed capable tires for everyday and offroad use. Hankook Dynapro ATm tires have the right construction for offroad use and minimal impact to the expedition already hefty fuel consumption making them a great choice. They also added a bit of grit to the design of this adventuresome custom expedition.
Tinted Windows
Another way we furthered the blackout of this 2022 Ford Expedition was installing a 3M window tint. An often-overlooked perk of window tint film is its UV energy blocking. Much like how sunglasses protect your eyes this protects the interior of your car. It also contributes to keeping your car cooler during hot summer months. Of course, window tints are also most popular for creating an alluring and mysterious look to your ride for some extra style.
Tint is a great appearance upgrade to any vehicle, but it’s important to know that not all tint is made equal. We only use 3M tint because of their benefits over competing brands. We wrote a whole article about the benefits of 3M tint to help you learn more before making your decision.
Tints are offered from 5% to 70% with the lower numbers being darker. The % measures VLT (Visual Light Transference) which quantifies how much light comes through the film. When you go to select your tint, you need to keep in mind your local laws, so that you don’t get ticketed. We always recommend a professional install for this modification. Poor tint jobs will bubble and discolor over time. Make sure your window tint installer has a good warranty to protect your investment!
Complete Ceramic Coating
To polish off this blackout Expedition build we applied a ceramic coating that protects entire exterior. This ceramic coating safeguards the paint from water, dirt, and certain chemicals while enhancing the gloss and depth. If you plan on adding paint protection film to your vehicle, then you’ll need to apply the coating afterwards. Once the coating is cured the car will resist water and dust build up making it a whole lot easier to clean!
