Toyota has greatly improved the Tundra since its last generation as it continues to battle for a top spot among full-size trucks. New updates to the frame, suspension, and powertrain deliver a well rounded truck with improved torque and fuel consumption. The custom Toyota Tundra that we worked on features Toyota’s popular “Lunar Rock” color which pairs with a nice satin black. We ended up wrapping the roof and pillars of this truck along with further Tundra mods to the leveling and tires. To top it off we added a few additional cosmetic upgrades to boost its visual appeal.

Painted Grille Trim

The 2022 Tundra’s display a massive grille built to be daunting. We felt that the grille was just a bit too big, which is why we painted the trim around the grille to be the same lunar rock color found on the body. This customization helps minimize the size of the grille giving it a sleeker appearance.

1.5″ leveling kit and Spacers

Most trucks have a positive rake, which means the front-end is lower than the back-end. This is done intentionally by engineers to accommodate heavy loads in the bed or while hauling something. If you don’t do those activities often and want to have larger tires for off-road use leveling kits help make that happen. That’s why we installed a 1.5″ Rough Country leveling kit for this Tundra along with some spacers for a wider stance. We think that spacers make a big difference on the Tundra because the wheels are positioned slightly inside the frame giving it a “train car” look. Spacers help combat this by bringing the wheels out a bit and making them more dominate.

Off-Road Tire Upgrade

With the Tundra leveled out and spacers slapped on it was ready for an off-road tire upgrade. We selected a set of 18″ rim Toyo Open Country A/T III tires since they offer a good blend of off-road traction and on-road handling. They’re built to last a long time with tread designed for wet conditions and rocky landscapes.

Their tread includes a staggered ridge to help dig in to shifting terrain with ease, which allows for more traction. These tires are a great size for underneath the Tundra and their thoughtful design paired with their rough appearance works well with the truck. They make a great upgrade and are a great customization to any off-road vehicle!

Powder Coat Wheels

The wheels received a black powder coat finish which fits well with the grille, emblems, and roof wrap. Powder coat finishes are a mod that protects the rims while adding a great deal of personality. These finishes can come in just about any color you would want and they’re durable. That means they won’t chip from the debris tires face while on the road.

Drop Steps

Drop steps are a mod that nearly all trucks should have. They make entering and exiting your vehicle more smooth for all passengers. Another great thing is that they help lift you toward the roof in case you have to deal with anything attached up there.

Connecting a set of drop steps to this custom Toyota Tundra helped give it further character. These Rough Country side steps are rugged and they look great fixed to the side of the truck. Having more off-road accessories like these drop steps leads towards having a more versatile vehicle with an awesome appearance.

Custom Roof Wrap

As soon as we saw the black grille on this Tundra we thought about how great the color scheme was and wanted to add a vinyl wrap. We wrapped the roof and pillars of the cab on this truck with a silky satin black.

Covering the pillars with the wrap gives more of that secondary color to the vehicle and creates a two-tone look. This unique style is seen more often with Sedans and SUVs, but can make trucks look good too.

Tri-Fold Bed Cover

Wanting to keep certain cargo guarded from the elements and prying eyes, we made sure to include a tri-fold bed cover. When debating between a tri-fold or a roll-up bed cover, tri-folds are going to be a bit more durable and have compartmental use. They stay more secured and have better weather resistance, Where as roll-up covers sit flush in the truck bed and offer a bit more flexibility at a cheaper price. We chose to go with security and durability on this one.

Leather Seating

To upgrade the interior we swapped the factory standard seating with Katzkin leather upholstery. This lunar rock Tundra now features black leather seating with hexagonal white trim stitching. Changing the interior to leather is a great Tundra customization since it actually helps the value of the car over time. Having nice leather seating like this is usually reserved for higher level trim models, but this upgrade is surprisingly affordable aftermarket.

Window Tint

There was also the opportunity to add a touch of shade to windows on this custom Toyota Tundra by adding window tint. With window tint there’s a bit more privacy for the driver and passengers while also complementing the look of the new black roof and pillars.

Not only do they look good, window tint films provide protection for the vehicle along with the people and objects inside. It does this by blocking harmful UV ray’s from the sun.

Tinted films come in varying levels of darkness. We often offer 35%, 20%, and 5% levels of tinting. With tint the lowest % is the darkest. When you go to select your tint you need to keep in mind your local laws so that you don’t get ticketed. We always recommend a professional install for this modification. Poor tint jobs will bubble and discolor over time. Make sure your window tint installer has a good warranty to protect your investment!

Tailgate Vinyl Inlay

Wanting to add some more satin black to the back end of this Tundra a vinyl inlay seemed like the right move. We placed the vinyl lettering in with precision and succeeded in finishing up the last bit of black accents on the truck. Vinyl inlays like this come in all kinds of colors to best meet your trucks needs and they’re made for all kinds of models.

Paint Protection Film

With such an awesome paint color on a nice new truck we wanted to do everything we could to protect it. Our team applied PPF film to protect the front end of the Tundra from high impact debris on the road. This is done in order to prevent damage to the paint since chipping can lead to costly touch ups or rust over time. These new massive cube-like grilles on full-size trucks make PPF even more important. Rocks and debris hit the paint in a more direct way smacking straight into the paint instead of rolling off body curves which leads to a greater chance of chipping.

For more peace of mind and an easy clean a ceramic coating could be applied over the paint after the PPF is applied. Ceramic coating is just another protective layer to prevent dirt build up and deflect water.

Potential Add-ons

There are tons of mods to customize your Tundra out there. Some others we would consider adding are for the bed based on use. Things like bed mats, cargo nets, bed extenders, or additional attachments can all be helpful depending on lifestyle needs. Things like bed racks and folding tents are also quite popular for more outdoor adventure use. However you plan on using your Tundra there are accessories for you we just wanted to show you some easy ones for any tundra owner.
